CETL Welcomes New Full-Time Faculty

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) welcomed new faculty at the First-Year Experience Orientation at the Annandale Campus. While several members of the cohort are new to the region, more than half have taught or worked for NOVA in some capacity prior to accepting a full-time faculty position. In addition to getting a preview of the 2020 Power Up Your Pedagogy (PUP) conference and other college-wide professional development opportunities planned for the year, attendees heard from speakers presenting on topics ranging from student engagement and CARE reports to instructional partnerships.

The CETL team is particularly grateful to our invited speakers who offered their time and expertise, including Melissa Chabot, Regina Sanders, Maureen Lawson, Hector Revollo, Kevin Simons, Jill Mitchell, and Jean Dubro. Additionally, NOVA Reads and the Virginia Women’s Network representatives provided information and free resources to attendees.

Following the speaker series, CETL campus leads facilitated small break-out conversations on topics including pedagogical approaches to the first day of the semester, inclusive teaching practices, the use of informal assessment opportunities, and teaching as a vocation.

The 2019-2020 new faculty cohort will meet again at a PUP conference session offered by Dr. Sheri Robertson and others in Academic Affairs. Under the current CETL structure, campus and division professional development events are offered by campus faculty leads with the support of deans and provosts, and college events like the orientation of new faculty and PUP are supported by Academic Affairs.
