Faculty, staff, and administrators at NOVA’s Medical Education Campus recently accepted a challenge from MEC Provost Dr. Nicole Reaves to live more active and healthy lifestyles. The Step Challenge, a fun way to use step-counting pedometers to track daily physical activity and motivate colleagues to exercise more became highly-competitive with amazing life-changing results.
In teams of five, participants creatively named their group and reported their steps weekly to their team captain. A total of eight teams participated for a chance to receive giveaway prizes, a fruit basket, a reserved parking spot for one month, and of course, bragging rights as the winners of the Step Challenge.
The combined total steps for all eight teams was 17,355,412, which is equivalent to 8,200 miles – the same walking distance from Virginia to California and back, and back to California again. Although the last four weeks were a close call, team Green Nighthawks – Student Services Executive Assistant (team captain) Friba Alizai, Financial Aid Manager John Riemer, Dean of Students Dr. Beatrice McKeithen, Academic Success Counselor Fahmeen Faruki, and IT Specialist Owusu Bonsu won first place.
Program Director David Falkenstein acquired the most steps out of all participants with 1,445,812. Congratulations to each team for a job well done!
