Over 40 students traveled to the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Student Leadership Retreat at the Founder’s Inn in Virginia Beach. The theme for the 2018 VCCS event was Unleash Your Super Leader.
In addition to hearing multiple keynote speakers, students attended several breakout sessions, participated in a service activity and met with student leaders from other VCCS institutions.
Several NOVA employees presented at the conference also. Tiffney Laing’s (LO, Student Life) presentation was The Art of Mastering You: A Self-Leadership Tool; Dr. Tyson Beale’s (AL, Dean of Students) presentation was Higher, Faster, Stronger: Influence and Preparation; and Sara Clifton (WO, Student Life) titled her presentation Playing With Leadership: Leadership Lessons Learned From Childhood Toys.
Mat “Tank” McCarl (AN, Student Life) served on the 2018 Planning Committee.
In October, over 60 students went to the NOVA Student Leadership at the Claggett Center in Adamstown, Md. The two-day trip focused on communication and team building. The highlight of the trip is always day two when the students can participate in a challenge-by-choice ropes course, which encourages them to trust others and demonstrates that leadership is more than self-reliance.
