The NOVA Educational Foundation’s signature fundraising event focused on Women in Technology with guest speaker Col. Eileen Collins, NASA’s first female shuttle commander, and a power trio of honorees Teresa Carlson, Amazon Web Services, Bobbie Kilberg, Northern Virginia Technology Council, and Zuzana Steen, Micron Technologies.
The event, held on Sept. 12, surpassed all expectations. To open the evening a brief video highlighting the NOVA Foundation’s accomplishments, called The Art of Giving, was shown. Nathan Carter, a NOVA associate professor and senior academic fellow was master of ceremonies for the evening and launched the festivities by letting guests know they would be learning about the achievements of NOVA’s Women in Technology honorees as well as the incredible accomplishments of the guest speaker. All four are leaders in the field of technology as well as leaders in their industry, and all are universally respected for their achievements. Carter acknowledged everyone’s ongoing commitment and support for NOVA, which enables the College to lift up students of all ages and from all walks of life.
Col. Eileen Collins knows the value of a community college education first-hand, having proudly graduated from Corning Community College with an Associates in Mathematics. Collins is a shining example of how NOVA can help members of the community to succeed. NOVA encourages all its students to shoot for the stars, dream big dreams and make their dreams a reality.
The event demonstrated how the NOVA’s Perkins Grant Initiative has focused on outreach to women in technology. To celebrate this and recognize the three honorees for their contributions to women in technology, the NOVA Foundation announced that three NOVA student scholarships will be awarded in their names, in fall 2019, and each was congratulated for their ongoing support and indefatigable commitment.
Col. Collins offered the following advice to young women who are interested in pursuing STEM careers at the end of the evening, “Take a variety of different courses, find the ones that you are passionate about and continue to study. Don’t give up!”
