Valued Traditions With CCI Program Participants

On Friday, August 31, Dr. Ralls spoke with the 15 Community College Initiative (CCI) Program participants studying at the NOVA Annandale Campus during their U.S. Culture Society and Institutions class. He asked each student to introduce her/himself to hear more about what they are studying at NOVA and which country they represent. Dr. Ralls shared how much he enjoys meeting with the CCI participants every year and reading the CCI NOVA student blog to learn about their accomplishments and experiences. He also mentioned how going to a NOVA ice hockey game with CCI participants has become a special annual tradition for him, and that he looks forward to “tailgating” before the game this year!

The CCI Program is an international exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The NOVA-led Community College Consortium (CCC), operating out of NOVA’s Office of International Education and Sponsored Programs, has been administering the CCI Program in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State since 2010. In addition to managing the program at nine community college campuses across the US, NOVA’s Alexandria and Annandale Campuses also host CCI participants.

This year, the Alexandria and Annandale Campus will each host 15 CCI participants. The 30 participants are from Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, and Turkey. They are studying in academic fields including business, early childhood education, engineering, IT, media, and tourism and hospitality management.
