On March 14, Anusuya Adhikari and Monica Miranda, first-year nursing students, were awarded The Harriet H. Fatzinger Nursing Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Anusuya is a Certified Nursing Assistant and intern at a healthcare facility in Manassas. Two years ago, Anusuya moved to the US from Nepal to continue on her childhood dream of working in the healthcare field. She hopes, upon graduation, to work in gerontology and to transfer to George Mason University to complete her B.S.N. Monica currently works at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She is the daughter of two immigrants from El Salvador who work to put their children through college. Both women spoke briefly to the friends of Harriet and were grateful for their scholarships.
Harriet H. Fatzinger began her career as a flight attendant for United Airlines. When her job was relocated to the west coast, her husband, Dr. Glen Fatzinger, encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She graduated from NOVA in 1972. Beyond her nursing career, Mrs. Fatzinger was very involved in the community, creating programs for children and adults with special needs that exist to this day. Unfortunately, Mrs. Fatzinger passed away in 2011.
Dr. Fatzinger began the Harriet H. Fatzinger scholarship on the way to Mrs. Fatzinger’s funeral. He stopped at the NOVA Foundation to begin the process and the scholarship has been awarded for the last six years. Dr. Fatzinger is a former chair of the College Board, one of the founders of the NOVA Foundation, a three-time alumnus of NOVA, and an adjunct professor.
