NOVA Hockey Celebrates 10 Years With Capitals

To celebrate a decade of hockey, NOVA’s hockey team is partnering with the Washington Capitals for a special doubleheader on Friday, March 30 at Capital One Arena. Following the Washington Capitals game against 2006 Stanley Cup Champions the Carolina Hurricanes, the Nighthawks will take the ice for the 10th-anniversary alumni game.

Tickets for the doubleheader are $60 and include a Capitals T-shirt.

Ten years ago this month, the NOVA hockey team hit the ice and Rob Lucier took it upon himself to find $3,000 from the NOVA student activity budget to buy 10 practice slots and one game slot to show the College that there is enough interest in the program. Nearly 30 students showed up at the Mount Vernon RECenter in Alexandria that first season and NOVA hockey was born.

Although the Nighthawks lost their first game to Johns Hopkins in May of that year, NOVA made hockey a non-NJCAA sport, and the Nighthawks found a home in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference (BRHC) as a provisional member in 2009. Lucier was named the captain for the 2009-2010 season by NOVA’s first coaches, who were Barrett Haga, Trevor Blair and Michael Donnelly.

Since that season, the Nighthawks have won the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) BRHC Tournament and are two-time division champions, along with achieving a national ranking of No. 14.

Many members of the hockey team have graduated from four-year schools and many others have gone on to serve proudly in the military.

All alumni planning on playing March 30 are required to attend practice and a meeting March 28 at Prince William Ice Center. Alumni will not play at Capital One Arena if waiver forms are not completed and practice and the meeting are not attended.

Only NOVA Nighthawk hockey alumni in good standing are allowed to participate in the event. Additional criteria including status with NOVA, USA Hockey, ACHA and any legal matters may be considered in finalizing the roster. NOVA Hockey reserves the right to disqualify participants without cause.
