Northern Virginia Community College Athletics and NVCC-TV partnered to broadcast select Nighthawk Athletics events during the 2017-18 academic year.

NOVA produced several volleyball games for broadcast in the fall. The first production on NVCC-TV came on September 26 when NOVA hosted Hagerstown Community College. In addition to volleyball, hockey and men’s and women’s basketball games were broadcast.

“This is really exciting for our Nighthawk athletic program and student-athletes to bring additional exposure to our program,” said College-Wide Student Life Director Brian Anweiler. “It has been a team effort between athletics and NVCC-TV to produce the games along with Dr. Ralls that encouraged the collaborative initiative.”

The games have been produced and directed by Anweiler. Gene Ertel from NVCC-TV has provided production support and guidance along with all the crew from NVCC-TV. Several NOVA students have also helped with the productions as well.

“Successful intercollegiate athletics programs are more than just competition,” added Anweiler. “Students are able to explore career paths and get hands-on experience while they are at NOVA and the production experience provides real-world practical opportunities.”

The former NOVA men’s basketball coach and current registrar at the Annandale Campus have provided color commentary for the Nighthawks’ basketball broadcast. Local sports broadcast personality Ben Simon has handled the play-by-play duties.

In addition to being broadcast on a tape delay broadcast on NVCC-TV, the games have been streamed live on the NOVA Nighthawks Facebook page.
