Student Leaders Meet With Virginia General Assembly

On January 25, 2018, four NOVA student leaders met in Richmond with members of the Virginia General Assembly to share their stories of being community college students, their successes at NOVA, and issues that students are facing. The group included Brenda Medrano Frias, the Student Representative to the NOVA College Board. The students shared the challenges facing DACA students and the need to expand the Workforce Credentials Grant Program. NOVA serves almost half of all DACA students residing in Virginia; the NOVA students shared what it means to be a DACA student attending college. The Workforce Credentials Grant Program is an increasingly popular program at NOVA and the Virginia Community College System is looking to secure funding to expand the program so more students can participate. Currently, Workforce credential programs are not included in state or federal financial aid packages and any aid a student might receive would have to come from scholarships meant specifically for the Workforce Program.

Students met with members of the House of Delegates who represent Northern Virginia. Throughout the day, the students interacted with Delegate Jennifer Boysco, Delegate Marcus Simon, Delegate David Reid, and Delegate Elizabeth Guzman.

As part of their trip, the students attended a session of the House of Delegates and were formally recognized by Delegate Guzman. Delegate Guzman is a NOVA alumnus and was newly elected to represent Virginia’s 31st House of Delegates district, which covers Prince William County and Fauquier County. Delegate Guzman will deliver the address for the 52nd Commencement Ceremony on May 12, at 2 p.m. at Jiffy Lube Live.

It is great that our students have the opportunity to meet with our legislatures and represent their perspectives as NOVA Students to them. I am curious–who were the student leaders and which campuses are they from? I was disappointed that their names were not included in the article.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to write us! Within the article, we added the list of student names to the large group photo. The main/feature photo for the story has contained people’s names. However, the main/feature photos of all stories only reveal the story titles when you hover over them, not the captions — it’s part of the template code. We look forward to your continued readership.

As someone who invites Virginia delegates and senators to my NOVA classes, I was thrilled to see this article. Students often do not realize how much state legislators can help them. I was hoping to see quotes from the students about their impressions on meeting with the delegates. Also, even though Delegate Guzman’s name appears in the article four times, she is not identified in a picture.

Thank you for your comment about being happy to see the article. However, please note that you misspoke about Guzman. She is prominently in the main photo for the story and her name is in the main photo caption for the story.
